The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
