Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a armed takeover in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The scheme was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the armed forces officials. Lula was took office without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, many his followers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.
